Pulitzer Prize for Drama

South Pacific received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1950, just one of the many achievements and accolades the production is set to conquer. The issue of racial prejudice is candidly and sensitively discussed throughout the musical, a feat considering the culture and views at the time the musical was first produced. South Pacific’s Broadway production is a recipient of 10 Tony Awards, and is the only musical production to ever win all four Tony Awards for acting prowess. South Pacific tickets have always been a favorite among musical fans, and the success of the production led to film adaptation in 1958. The musical’s Broadway revival (which started in 2008) continues to draw crowds, not much different from the situation a few decades earlier.

The musical South Pacific is based on several stories from the book Tales of the South Pacific, the Pulitzer Prize winning novel of James Michener published in 1948. The musical premiered in 1949, with music created by Richard Rodgers and lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II.
